The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian
by Sherman Alexie

"But I don't think I'll be a very good high school player. Rowdy is probably going to start varsity as a freshman, but I figure the bigger and better kids will crush me. It's one thing to hit jumpers over other eighth graders; it's a whole other thing to score on high school monsters. I'll probably be a benchwarmer on the C squad while Rowdy goes on to all-state glory and fame." (Alexie, 28)

...Arnold expresses doubt all the way through his diary. It could just be a defense mechanism or that he's honestly unsure of himself. I can see it both ways because he gets picked on everyday and looks a bit funny and stutters with a lisp which doesn't always add to ones confidence. On the other hand he seems very okay with his lack of confidence always going ahead and doing what needs to be done anyway so sometimes it feels like he's just setting himself up for failure so that he won't be disappointed if he messes up. My flash fiction shows someone who doubts themselves very differently because as with most people it stops them from doing what they doubt. Another difference is that Arnold isn't necessarily held back by the judgments of other people as much as his fear of being physically unable to do something. There are moments when he's afraid of letting people know things about him as well, like the fact that he's poor.

"Hey, listen," I said. "The reason I was getting sick in there is -"
I thought about telling him the whole truth, but I just couldn't.
"I bet you're just sick with love," Roger said.
"No, well, yeah, maybe," I said. "But the thing is, my stomach is all messed up because I, er, forgot my wallet. I left my money at home, man." (Alexie, 126)

The main difference between Arnold and the person in my flash fiction is that Arnold has bravery and ambition. The picture shows someone trying to escape the thing that holds him back which is something I find that Arnold does everyday just by going to school and facing the people who want to hurt him, just generally doing the things he's afraid of...
